IoT for a Smart City
As part of the European “Lighthouse” REPLICATE Project, Zeetta integrated its network orchestration platform NetOS with the Open Source FIWARE IoT platform to demonstrate how Zeetta’s software-defined networking tools can be used to provide a flexible management of a smart city network infrastructure in order to deliver connectivity services to large deployments of IoT devices.

The REPLICATE Project
REPLICATE – REnaissance of PLaces with Innovative Citizenship And TEchnologies – is a leading European Smart City project that aims to deploy energy efficiency, mobility and ICT solutions in city districts.
The €25m project is led by three European cities (called Smart City ‘Lighthouses’): San Sebastian in Spain, Florence in Italy and Bristol in England. There are also three ‘follower’ cities that will be replicating interventions in their cities including Essen (Germany), Nilüfer (Turkey) and Lausanne (Switzerland) and a number of ‘observer’ cities, including Guangzhou (China) and Bogota (Colombia). The project has a consortium of 38 partners including Zeetta Networks.
Zeetta's contribution
In the REPLICATE project, Zeetta demonstrated a new paradigm for IoT deployments leveraging on the network automation provided by NetOS®.
Using NetOS Rapide® as a reference design and demonstration platform the participating Smart Cities were able to provide integrated connectivity and manage IoT infrastructure in a flexible and cost efficient way.
Zeetta’s NetOS® was used to discover, adopt and provision automatically the required services to a large population of IoT devices through the FIWARE platform, based on a set of rules, as soon as they are connected to the network.
The time-to-operation of the IoT system and costs required to deploy, provision and maintain services to the IoT devices were dramatically reduced while.

FIWARE IoT Platform
FIWARE is an open-source initiative defining a universal set of standards for contextual data management which facilitates smart solutions for different vertical markets including Smart Cities, Smart Industry and Smart Energy.
The FIWARE platform provides a rather simple yet powerful set of APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that ease the development of Smart Applications in multiple application areas. The specifications of these APIs are public and royalty-free.
You can find more about the Fiware platform in this YouTube video.
