IBC Media and Telecoms Catalysts

In 2019, in collaboration with the Tele-Management Forum (TMF), IBC launched its first series of catalysts.

These Media Innovation Accelerator Projects bring together buyers and end-users (Champions) and solutions and technology providers (Participants) from across the media and telco space to collaboratively develop proof-of-concept projects.

5G-enabled tourism overview

The 5G-enabled tourism catalyst used key technology enablers such as mobile edge computing (MEC), network slicing and service slicing, to enhance the visitor experience to heritage sites by creating content and the means to deliver it to a mixed augmented and virtual reality application developed by BBC R&D and Aardman.

Zeetta Networks’ role in the project

Zeetta Networks used it’s NetOS Rapide™, deployable enterprise network, for the catalyst in Amsterdam.

NetOS Rapide™ created and managed a local Wi-Fi network, with Wi-Fi substituting for 5G-New Radio and a mobile-edge-computing (MEC) server.

The augmented reality (AR) images were served to four Samsung smartphones from the MEC server.  This meant the AR application could be accessed by “low-end” phones, because the image processing was off-loaded. This also meant that battery-life for the phones increased by 15-20 times.
